Continuation of the Translation and Learning Process During the Contribution

After completing my first translations within the Gutenberg project, I continued working on new strings available in the Spanish (Costa Rica) (es_CR) locale. This stage allowed me to gain greater confidence in the process and better understand how the contribution dynamics work within WordPress Polyglots.

Once I understood the general functioning of the platform and reviewed the local glossary available for the es_CR locale, the translation process began to feel easier. Many of the strings corresponded to common interface elements, which made it easier to identify their meaning and propose appropriate translations.

However, not all strings were equally clear. In some cases, I encountered terms that did not appear in the glossary and whose meaning could vary depending on the context in which they were used within the system. In those situations, I preferred not to submit a translation, as I was not completely sure which option would be the most appropriate.

Another difficulty I encountered was understanding the exact context in which certain words were used within the plugin’s code. In some cases, the Original String field included a section called References that pointed to a specific line in the project’s source code. This reference allows contributors to review how that text is used within the system and helps interpret its meaning more accurately before translating it.

When the code reference was available and it was possible to access the corresponding file, it helped provide a better understanding of the context in which the word or phrase was used. However, in some cases the link did not load correctly or was not clear enough to interpret its use. In those situations, I decided not to translate those strings and continued working with others that were clearer and easier to understand within the system.

This process allowed me to realize that software translation does not consist only of translating words, but also of correctly interpreting the context in which they are used within the system.
